Creating a reading culture: how intensive and extensive reading build real language skills
Reading isn’t just a skill we teach; it’s a habit we help students build. In this webinar, we’ll look at how a balanced use of intensive and extensive reading can create a genuine reading culture in our classrooms. We’ll start by clarifying the different roles each approach plays: intensive reading helps learners slow down, notice language, and really understand how English works; extensive reading gives them the chance to read more freely, develop fluency, and enjoy the experience without pressure.
The session will focus on what this looks like in everyday teaching. We’ll explore simple approaches to selecting and working with texts, encouraging reluctant readers, and creating simple routines that make reading feel natural rather than forced. We’ll also discuss ways to check understanding and progress without turning every text into a test.
By the end, teachers will walk away with concrete strategies they can use immediately to support students not only in improving their language skills, but also in discovering the pleasure and confidence that come from reading regularly.
